Zimbabwe has opened its first rural Artificial Intelligence, Digital and Innovation Hub at Nyamuroro Vocational Training Centre in Gokwe North. The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training established the facility with the United Nations Development Programme and Uncommon.org.
The ministry said the hub had enrolled 52 young people who have begun lessons. Its launch is a practical test of whether technology training can be brought to communities outside the country’s main urban centres, where access to devices, connectivity and specialised instruction can be limited.

Skills close to home
The facility is intended to give young people access to digital skills, AI, coding and innovation opportunities. The government has described the location as deliberate: digital transformation, it argues, cannot be confined to cities if rural youth are to participate in the digital economy.
Training in these areas can open several paths, from building simple software and digital services to using online tools in existing fields such as agriculture and education. But the value of the hub will depend on more than introducing learners to new technologies. Reliable internet, suitable equipment, regular instruction and mentors will be needed to help students move from lessons to projects and work.
From access to opportunity
A digital hub can also serve as a shared place for learners to collaborate, test ideas and connect with employers or institutions. That local network is particularly important for young people who might otherwise need to travel to a city to find training or technology communities.

The ministry has said it wants to establish more hubs across the provinces. Gokwe North will provide an early measure of what that expansion requires: how many learners complete programmes, what they build, and whether new skills lead to employment, further study or viable businesses.
The project is a meaningful step toward widening access to technology. Its lasting impact will be judged by the opportunities learners can reach after the launch attention fades.
