Zimbabwe’s People’s Own Savings Bank has introduced a group-savings service designed to work on a basic mobile phone, not only through a smartphone app. Members can start or join a Huruyadzo/Inkunzi group by dialing *223# and following a USSD menu, POSB said at the platform’s launch on 10 February 2026.
The bank says users do not need a smartphone, internet access or even a POSB account to use the service. The mobile menu lets a group creator name a savings club, invite members and assign roles such as chairperson, secretary and treasurer. Invited members can accept or decline. Digitising Mukando without requiring an app
POSB presents the platform as a way to bring the community practice of Mukando into a more structured digital service. The bank says group funds cannot be withdrawn by one person without the knowledge and approval of other members. It also says savings earn interest and that the platform has no monthly service fee.
USSD is an important design choice. It can reach feature phones and does not require data bundles, lowering the technical barrier for members who may not have a smartphone or reliable mobile internet. At the same time, shared controls need to be understandable to every member, and groups will want clear information about transaction charges, interest terms, dispute handling and what happens if a member loses access to their number.
Access is the promise; trust is the test
The bank says the service is intended for informal traders, savings clubs, churches, farmers and other groups. POSB’s announcement describes the product’s intended safeguards, but does not provide independent evidence yet on uptake or how groups are using it.
For now, Huruyadzo/Inkunzi is a notable example of a mobile financial service designed around the limits of connectivity rather than assuming everyone can download an app. Its value will depend on whether that simple access is matched by transparent rules and dependable support when a group needs help.
